A manager's output isn't what they do, it's what their team produces. Andy Grove's blueprint for finding the handful of high-leverage activities that actually move the needle.
About the book
Grove's formula is stated almost mathematically: a manager's output equals the output of their organization plus the output of neighboring organizations under their influence. Nothing a manager does — emails, meetings, reviews, decisions — counts on its own, only through how much it raises that combined output, which makes managerial time the scarce resource and leverage the only question worth asking of any activity. The book turns that into practice: meetings as the actual medium of management, task-relevant maturity as the basis for delegation style, and clean decision-making and OKRs as tools rather than rituals.
Best used for
—Structuring a 1:1 agenda and meeting cadence around actual leverage
—Matching a management style to an employee's task-relevant maturity instead of one-size-fits-all
—Running a performance review or OKR cycle that ties back to real output indicators
“This is the best book I've read on leadership, building organizations and spending your time on the most important tasks for your team.”
